Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Today's Poll - Favorite performance of Shakedown Street

Good Morning all... here I am at my 9-5, except it is actually 6am-3pm... terrible.

Anyhow, thanks for your good show recommendations yesterday, I downloaded 10-31-83, 6-25-85 and a couple of others.

Today's poll - What show had your favorite version of Shakedown Street?

I love this song, and am looking for some more great versions... off the top of my head I can think of 4-26-83

My instincts said 6.30.85, but I checked out 4.26.83 just to make sure. My vote still has to go to 6.30.85. What's a walk down Shakedown Street if you haven't chugged a beer first?

BUUUUURRRRRRPPP!!!

Pardon me.

Tough poll...there's so much to choose from! I'm going to choose 10/25/79, even though it's not going to win. There's another good one on 10/31/79, but I'm sticking with 10/25/79.

To me '81 was a great Shakedown year.
Always loved the slow funky version of 7-14-81.

Honorable Mention:
7-12-81
12-31-81
and of course the 18 minute monster!!
11-1-79

Just checked out 1-10-79...wow...The tempo and sound of this Shakedown sounds like an unstoppable army marching down the battlefield ready to crush anything in front of them. This show also has a Dark Star and St. Stephen, must have been a pretty good night.

I'll throw in 3/13/81 Utica as the 1st set opener. Real, real sweet and Jerry gets into the vocals with some soul.

06-30-1985 is my favorite...there are some other versions that have some great classic moments that define a great shakedown, as well...08-28-1981, 03-27-1985, 04-17-1982, 11-24-1978, 09-16-1978, 12-05-1979, 10-25-1979, 01-15-1979, 05-06-1980, 09-12-1981, 12-31-1984...

my personal favorite that I was at was 12-6-89, the reason being is that it had particular meaning for those of us that witness/lived through the 89 Earthquake.

I was there for the 89 quake, it wasn't really that devastating, I think 99.9999% of the people who experience it survived, I will check out the shakedown though, thanks

Wasn't very devastating? Dude! The Bay Bridge collapsed, the Cypress Structure on 880 did too and trapped many, many people for days...those it didn't kill...and the fires in SF raged.

The quake initiated a decade-plus of retro-fit work to older buildings, bridges and highways.

The quake changed/devastated the lives of thousands of citizens and their families.

My Dad travelled that EXACT stretch of the Cypress at that EXACT time of day it collapsed. The ONLY thing that saved his life that day was that he left work early to catch the world series ( Oakland vs. SF remember? ) on TV.

I can definately say I'd be pretty F'n devasted had it been any other day.

In my mind, Santa Cruz has never fully recovered from the quake - a complelely different downtown since then. Also, there would have been a lot more serious loss of life had the As and Giants not been getting ready to play in the series as lots of people already somewhere watching the game and not on the road (recall the cars and people inside crushed by the freeway collapse?).

many have noted the 6/30/85 Shakedown as the best.

imo they are correct, but i am sure there are versions out there i have not had the pleasure of hearing.

always loved Alligator alley 1980. Maybe novelty reasons since it jams flawlessly into Franklin's Tower.

OK, 11.29.79 is my pick. But dam if that 1.10.79 doesn't just make you sheikyerbouti. Thanks for the new inspiration. I'll have to d/l the rest of the show and explore more late 78 & early 79 Shakedowns. Any suggestions? Man, I love this forum.

This version of 11.29.79 sounds better to my ears:

You nailed my favorite- 4/26/83. In fact, in a bit of irony, I listened to it on my way to work today. Some of those bombs Phil drops always make people in traffic look over at me.
